In 1929 Chevrolet introduced a 194 cubic inch displacement (cid) (3.2 L) six-cylinder engine as standard in all its models. This engine with overhead valves replaced the previous 171 cid (2.8 L) four-cylinder engine. A copy of this straight-six engine was used in the first Toyota car, the AA from 1936.

In 1953 the fiberglass Chevrolet Corvette was introduced and in 1955 the Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe with the small-block V8 came to market.
1959 saw the Corvair with its rear-mounted, aluminum flat six-cylinder air-cooled engine. It was a compact car produced as four-door sedan and station wagons, two-door convertible and hardtop coupe, a small van and as a small pickup truck. The Chevrolet Corvair was a domestic answer to compact cars imported from Europe and 1.8 million Corvair's in its different configurations were produced.
The latter part of the 1970s and the 1980s saw more fuel efficient vehicles due to higher gas prices and government mandated emission controls. The 4th generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, the C4, was completely redesigned for the 1984 model year.

The Camaro, introduced in 1966 as an answer to the Ford Mustang, was redesigned for its 4th generation that started selling in 1993. The Camaro was removed from the market in 2002, but reintroduced in 2009. The 5th generation Camaro has a design based on the first generation. The 5th generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, the C5, was introduced in 1997, the 6th generation, the C6, in 2005.
